What Aprende is

Aprende is the Portuguese and Tetum imperative: learn. It is a complete learning platform an organisation runs on its own infrastructure. One binary, a folder of Markdown courses, and a single database file.

On one side sits Moodle and its institutional peers: heavyweight, demanding to run, built for universities. On the other sits commercial learning software, priced per seat, hosted offshore, online only. In between there has been almost nothing for an organisation that wants to run its own training, at low cost, and keep its own records.

What it does

Courses are authored as plain Markdown and published by dropping a file into a folder. Learners are managed in cohorts and enrolled by invite code, with no email server anywhere in the product. Assessment is by quiz, graded on the server so answers never reach the browser early. Completion is proven by a certificate anyone can verify from a link.

It runs on a small server, or Pi-class hardware, near the people using it. It works in more than one language, and a lesson completed in any language counts once. It holds no video and nothing that phones home.

Who it's for

Social-impact organisations that run training and want to own both the infrastructure and the records. An NGO inducting field staff and issuing certificates that satisfy funders. A government social services team training on procedure, with nothing leaving the country. A campaign onboarding volunteers without putting the list inside offshore software. A climate or sustainable development organisation teaching partners in more than one language, from a cheap server.

How it's held

Aprende is self-hostable and deploys in the jurisdiction of your choice. It runs on the same sovereignty-first principles as Kora, Suara and Selo: your data, your infrastructure, your control. Backup is copying a folder. There is no per-seat pricing and no platform that can be switched off from somewhere else. Built by OpenImpact Studio, licensed per deployment.

What it doesn't do

No video hosting. No SCORM, xAPI or LTI. No discussion forums, no payments, no gamification, no per-seat metering. Each absence is a decision. Staying small is what keeps Aprende cheap to run, quick to learn, and possible for a boutique studio to maintain for the long term.
