What Aprende is

Aprende means learn in Portuguese and Tetum. It is a complete learning platform an organisation installs on its own server. One program, a folder of Markdown courses, and a single database file.

Moodle and the systems like it were built for universities. They are heavy, and they need someone paid to keep them running. The other option has been commercial training software: charged per learner, hosted in another country, useless without a connection. An organisation that wants to run its own training cheaply and keep its own records has had almost nothing to choose from.

What it does

Courses are written in Markdown, a plain text format, and published by dropping the file into a folder. Learners are enrolled in cohorts with an invite code, and there is no email server anywhere in the product. Quizzes are marked on the server, so the answers never reach the learner's browser. When a learner finishes, they get a certificate that anyone can check from a link.

It runs on a small server or a Raspberry Pi, close to the people using it, and keeps working when the internet drops. It works in more than one language, and a lesson completed in any language counts once. It holds no video and nothing that sends data back to us or anyone else.

Who it's for

Organisations that run their own training and want to keep both the software and the records. An NGO inducting field staff and issuing certificates that satisfy funders. A government social services team training staff on procedure, with no data leaving the country. A campaign training volunteers without handing its list to software hosted in another country. A climate or sustainable development organisation teaching partners in more than one language, from one cheap server.

How it's held

You install Aprende on a server you choose, in the country you choose, and the records stay there. Like everything else we build, it is built so the organisation running it holds its own data and can walk away with all of it. Backup is copying a folder. There is no charge per learner, and no company elsewhere that can switch it off. Built by OpenImpact Studio and licensed per deployment.

What it doesn't do

Aprende does not host video. It does not support SCORM, xAPI or LTI, the standards that let large learning systems swap course packages and plug into each other. There are no discussion forums, no payments, no badges or leaderboards, and no counting of learners for billing. Each absence is a decision. Staying small is what keeps Aprende cheap to run, quick to learn, and possible for a boutique studio to keep maintaining for years.
